The Art of Phillip Light

Hi Phillip! First off, I want to compliment you on how FABULOUS your art is! Each sketch seems to come to life, especially with their unique looks and background stories. Your DisneyBound art is superb, your game sketches are amazing, but your warm-up sketches--those always amaze me, which leads to my second question. A friend of mind is a high school freshman who recently got a tablet, but feels she's not a very good artist--but she is! Any advice for her? Thanks!

Okay! So when I was in middle school I got my first tablet and photoshop, and I played around with it for a while and got really frustrated because I thought I sucked and all these great artists were doing great things in photoshop and I just couldn’t do it. Because of that I gave up on digital work till I was in my senior year of high school or so. That summer I knuckled down and practiced my butt off, looked at what other artists were doing with photoshop and tried to replicate it for my own practice and then translated what I learned into my own style. And I got A LOT better, and actually became more confident in my digital work.

Tell your friend to stick with it! A tablet can feel really weird at first and photoshop can be confusing, but if she continues to practice, looks at a couple of tutorials to get started, then she will get a lot better! Keep trying, never give up, don’t be afraid to mess up and make horrible art because it will get better. I have to tell myself this all the time. Best of luck! :)

Thank you so much! What I do during an art block phase is just keep drawing even if it looks like complete crap, I just don’t show it to anyone haha. I also go through my inspiration blog and art books just to get my psyched about drawing again and find other things that might inspire future pieces or things I might want to practice on :)

Phillip, this daily warm up is such a good idea, I love your source of inspiration for each day (just from names? so cool!). Your first two days are marvelous, by the way. I love your art. Do you mind if I try the exercise as well? thanks!!
